Energy company Westerpoort Warmte B.V. is a collaborative association between the waste-to-energy company Amsterdam (AEB) and NUON Energy B.V. The company provides heat from waste incineration to Amsterdam’s district heating network. EMMTEC Services has been engaged to engineer the heat plants and buffers stations, and expanding the existing buffer stations, among other things.
Westpoort Warmte has invested in a staged expansion of the buffer station, taking a phased increase in the number of customers into account. We expanded the building in 2010, and the heat delivery capacity was increased for the first time. The third phase commenced in January 2015, and was delivered in July 2016. In this third phase, three 500 kW two-stage pumps per unit with corresponding controls and control boxes were fitted, with the connection to the underground heat network from Amsterdam-Noord also being performed. Ultimately, once the entire project is completed, it will be possible to deliver 230 MWth of heat through three main line systems linked to Westpoort, Nieuw-West and Amsterdam-Noord. The fourth phase iss now under way, and EMMTEC Services has also been commissioned to carry out the engineering for this. This entire project is set to be concluded in the next few years, and consists of several sub-projects treated as independent projects, with the overall project scope being the umbrella. This working method inspires confidence among the client, its customers, the project team and the contractors, meaning we provide the client peace of mind by taking its customers fully into account, and by focusing on challenges and risks. The consequences of practical solutions are provided for, and identified through regular communication and reporting, with the delivery obligation within the scope of the Heat Act being the client's main driver in this regard. Despite the buffer station having been entirely reconstructed, customers noticed no effect – let alone disadvantage – whatsoever, which Westpoort Warmte B.V. was more than satisfied with.
